What Was Joe Paterno To Do?

46 years, $4 million, 2 National Championships and one marred legacy will appear in the final box score for Joe Paterno.
Flowers, signs, and other mementos adorn the area of a statue of former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno as fans pay respects to the winningest football coach in college football history, on January 23, 2012 on the Penn State campus in State College, Pennsylvania.  Paterno, who died on January 22nd, won 409 games for Penn State as their head coach for 46 years.    'UPI/George Powers

Sadly his recent passing has some retracting prior sentiments towards Paterno and his actions in the recent Penn State scandal.

The long-time face of Pennsylvania's most recognizable institution of higher learning, is the very reason for PSU's current prestige. But in the end, questionable actions have created a hideous overcast that hover over all he has achieved.

The court of public opinion often had Paterno under the microscope more than the real monster in Jerry Sandusky.

What seems to get under my skin more than any other aspect of this now tragedy is the amount of scrutiny placed on the recently deceased coaching legend. The crutch that most seem to be using is "he did not do enough". It was noted that Joe Paterno had so much influence in State College and the campus in particular, that he could complain about litter on the ground and in an instant university staff would have the matter handled in a moments notice.

But this was not as simple as garbage. We are talking about people. Allegedly young people, which happen to be boys that were manipulated and raped, as horrid as that sounds.

Jerry Sandusky's first incident was in 1998 when a when the mother of an 11-year old boy reported that her son had showered with Sandusky. In the end he retires, promised to never do it again and the university police chief advises that the case be closed.

Joe Paterno's name was never mentioned in the initial incident in the timeline on CNN.com. The first time he was introduced into the situation was March 2, 2002 when a graduate assistant ( who later was revealed as former assistant coach Mike McQueary) told him he saw Sandusky performing anal sex on a young boy that was about 10 years of age. Paterno then takes appropriate action and tells his superior in Athletic Director Tim Curley.

Next a meeting takes place between the young McQueary, Curley and the Senior Vice President of Finance  and Business for the college, Gary Schultz.

Curley and Schultz take it upon themselves to hide the truth from the grand jury and tell say that had not been told of any sexual allegations against Sandusky, after McQueary notified the grand jury of what he saw in the locker room between the child and Sandusky.

The second mile, founded by Sandusky hears about the allegations and Curley tells the organization that the matter was being reviewed internally and there was no finding of wrong doing, after they were told of a first hand account of child rape.

Joe Paterno's superiors suppressed information, in an attempt to keep matters in house. How can Paterno be blamed when he filtered the information along to his bosses and they then commit perjury after lying to the grand jury about what they were aware of?

The action taken was the revocation of Jerry Sandusky's keys, although he was still allowed full access to the campus and football activities.

The cat was out of the bag in 2002 and multiple people knew about the allegations. No one knows how any of the internal conversations went between Paterno, Curley, or Schultz. Paterno passed the proper information on.

But I guess he was supposed to hold a press conference in front of national television to reveal the finding, in the middle of his football season, recruiting, or spring practice.

Or he should have told during the investigation because the law was not doing enough, and in the end hamper the investigation because he is Joe Paterno and he is above the law and State College Police who should have  filed charges from the beginning, instead of finding no wrong doing and enabling a predator to terrorize countless young boys.

Let's not forgot Joe Paterno was not the law but a great football coach.

Jerry Sandusky is the monster here not Joe Paterno, RIP "Joe Pa"

Bengals' Jerome Simpson Indicted On Drug Charges

The most publicized catch of the 2011 season involving Jerome Simpson and a front flip, may be the last we see of four year veteran for some time. (video below)

Thursday, the Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver was indicted on one count of trafficking marijuana in excess of eight ounces. It it evident that his body was not the only thing Simpson was 'flipping'.

On September 19, 2.5 pounds of marijuana were confiscated from his home. Another six pounds were found inside the home upon further investigation.

Authorities were alerted when a suspicious package was detected at a Sacramento California shipping center. From there authorities were alerted and began tracking the package to its final destination which was eventually Simpson's Kentucky home.

This season Simpson emerged as the Bengals second receiver hauling in 50 catches for 725 yards and four TD's.

If found guilty, Simpson could face one to five years in prison.

Minnesota Timberwolves Kevin Love is NBA's Most Underrated Player; Contract Extension on Horizon

While Blake Griffin has been wowing spectators with his monster finishes and Dwight Howard has been indecisive with his future career aspirations, one player has been quietly putting up the best season of any big man in the NBA.
Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love smiles during a timeout in the second half of their NBA basketball game against the Toronto Raptors in the Target Center in Minneapolis January 29, 2011. If I told you Kevin Love averaged more points then Carmelo Anthony up to this point in the season, you would probably think I'm crazier then the Oklahoma City Thunder, after signing Russell Westbrook to a five-year $80 million dollar deal, but I digress.

The four-year veteran is playing as well as any player in the league averaging 25.2 points (fifth in the NBA) and 14.5 rebounds (second to Dwight Howard) and is on pace to make his second all-star team in the coming weeks.

The problem with Love is his team. The Minnesota Timberwolves are not exactly lighting the world on fire sitting at 6-8 which is good for the 11th best spot in the Western Conference.

The good news is they they will win 15 games. The last two seasons the Timberwolves have won 15 and 17 games respectively. His 62 career wins, is equal to the number of games the Chicago Bulls won last season.

For Love, it has been bad. Being in a small market in conjunction with playing for a perennial loser (six consecutive losing seasons, eight of 22 total seasons under .500) has made exposure hard to come by.

The addition of youngsters such as Ricky Rubio and Derrick Williams should make for an exciting future and possibly a contender in Minneapolis. Reports have indicated that Love is in line for a healthy contract extensions similar to that of his former UCLA teammate in Westbrook prior to next Wednesday's deadline for such deals.

There is no reason that Love can not be one of the faces of the NBA, similar to that of Kevin Durant, Lebron James, and Derrick Rose whom the NBA use in promotion whenever they can.

As of now we are looking at a borderline hall of fame barring injury and you heard it here first.

Rick Ross, Kelly Rowland and Others Help Bring In Dwayne Wade's Birthday with Performance in Miami

It must be nice to be Dwayne Wade, even though he has been sidelined with an injured left foot that did not stop him from celebrating his 30th birthday Sunday night in Miami (which is actually Tuesday.)
Hopefully D-Wade can get over the injuries and have many productive years after 30.

Tim Tebow is America Favorite Athlete According to ESPN Poll Do You Agree?

One thing is for sure, Tim Tebow has something special going on when that 'going' is good. But, and that is a BIG but, as soon as he fires one of those balls that travels like an airplane missing a wing and misses his target or hangs in the pocket too long before being sacked he's the worst thing since the XFL.

REUTERS/Mark Leffingwell (UNITED STATES  - Tags: SPORT FOOTBALL)

In the most recent ESPN poll conducted in December, Tebow was selected as the top athlete in America.

Not sure how much stock can be out into this poll that only had 1,502 people that partook in the voting according to Black Sports online. The guys Tebow finished ahead of were Kobe Bryant, Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, and Tom Brady.

These are more than likely votes casted by a bunch of 13-year olds who spend way too much time on the Internet and have been watching football for no more than two years and go where ever ESPN takes them in terms of formulating their opinion on sports.

In other words, they are band-wagoners...

1500 votes is not enough to figure out who the United States puts on a pedestal in terms of sports. But on second thought when it is put like that, maybe it is Tebow...

Who do you think is America's favorite athlete?

Robert Griffen III Declares For 2012 NFL Draft; Where Will He Land?

Now that Robert Griffin III or "RG3" has decided to enter the 2012 NFL draft, there is no doubt his name will begin to pick up steam, similar to last years Heisman Trophy winner and number one overall selection Cam Newton.

The question now becomes, where will we see the former Baylor University quarterback under center when mini camps commence this spring?

To his benefit, both  Matt Barkley and Landry Jones decided to return for their senior seasons, naturally placing RG3 behind the long-time consensus top player of the 2012 field -- prior to workouts of course -- in Andrew Luck.

Draft gurus Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay have Griffin III as the second best quarterback and sixth best overall prospect in this year's class.

Ironically enough, Indianapolis, Indiana will be at the forefront of developments in this situation which involve numerous variables.

The first of which is Peyton Manning's future with the Indianapolis Colts. Its funny how the same franchise went from discussions of contract extensions with the one of the NFL's best passers of all-time to parting ways with the same person in less than than six months, but that is life. If Manning stays with the Colts then who knows what happens at the top of the draft order.

Additionally, the NFL scouting combine held at the Colts Luca's Oil Stadium February 22-28 will be under the scope as this is the first chance 300 prospects will get a chance to display their all-too glorified measurables.

Luck and Griffin III will undoubtedly be the darlings of the week as media pundits debate who is the sure-fire stud based off workouts in spandex.

One thing I can tell you is RG3's 40-time will surely become a prime subject of conversation for the world-class runner in Indy.

If football did not work out, the 2008 track and field All-American in the 400 hurdles could have took his talents on the world stage and likely made another run at qualifying for the Olympics (advanced to semifinals of the 2008 US Olympic Trials).

In the end it will all come down to the particular preferences of team general managers come April 26. If the sound pocket passer is preferred then Luck is the first pick, but if a GM wants a hybrid between Mike Vick's legs and Cam Newton's arm then RG3 may be the guy as he potentially could leap-frog Luck.

The Rams, Vikings, Browns, and Buccaneers hold picks 2-5 and each have young, highly touted but unaccomplished signal callers on their rosters. It would not be a surprise if one of these teams took him providing he is not first overall.

If the latter does not come to fruition, Mike Shanahan and the Redskins sit at the sixth spot. It's safe to say there will be no Aaron Rodgers treatment for RG3 and his name will be off the board by the time Daniel Snyder and the bunch are on the clock.

However, there is one drawback to taking Griffin III and that may be his most shining achievement to date in the Heisman Trophy. The last 30 years have been filled with quarterbacks who came away with the award such as Ty Detmer, Chris Weinke, Eric Crouch and Mark Sanchez.

As the saying goes "history repeats itself". Teams should be wary of taking such an accomplished quarterback although history also tells us they won't, but lets keep our fingers crossed that Tim Tebow can help change the fortunes of Sam Bradford, Cam Newton and the newest winner in RG3.

In what may seem like a shock to many, the Jacksonville Jaguars have released 10 year veteran Quarterback David Garrard. He was expected to be the starter this season after holding the job for the past four seasons.

Luke McCown, who has only played in 16 career games will now be the Jaguars starter. The Jaguars drafted Blaine Gabbert with the 10th overall pick in last April's draft to be the future of Jacksonville's franchise. Gabbert is now a step closer to being handed the keys after the team's latest move.

61 Year Old Man to Play College Football

Senior members of society are normally off enjoying their lives as they enjoy the spoils of retirement. But, Alan Moore is taking a different approach to life.

Moore, 61, is a member of the Faulkner University football team as a kicker.

Moore did not just wake up one day and decide to be a football player. In 1968 he was a member of Holmes Community College team that made it to a national championship and prior to that he was a kicker in high school.

The onset of the Vietnam war in 1969 ended his days as a college football player and Moore joined the Army. After 10 months of living in a bunker and being involved in near death experiences Moore came back to the states.

When he returned, he had to take care of his family and took up work as a civil construction worker. In 2009 the recession caused Moore to lose his job and subsequently regain his dreams as a football player.

Video: Dwight Howard Dunks on 12 foot Court in Japan

Dwight Howard has developed into one of the faces of the NBA and as a result he has been on an overseas tour to promote the game.

In the clip below it appears that Howard is dunking on a giraffe basketball court that is 11-12 feet in the air. He has no problem completing the dunk and he slightly tomahawk's the ball through the hoop.

If the NBA was to raise the height of rims from the standard 10 feet that it currently is, Howard would no be phased.

Thanks to Pro basketball talk for the info.

Moyer did not pitch another game for the Phillies in 2010 but went on to pitch in the Dominican Winter Leagues where he injured his shoulder yet again. This time he needed Tommie John surgery to repair the elbow and things looked bleak.

Fast-forward to today and Moyer may be eyeing a return to mounds of the major leagues.

Video: Usain Bolt Disqualified From Final at World Championships

Usain Bolt looked on his way to being crowned a World Champion while competing in Daegu South Korea. However a false start (video below) proved to be his Achilles heel as he was eliminated from the race.

It was over before it began as Bolt failed to win the event he has dominated for the past three years. The winner was teammate Yohan Blake who won with a sub-10 second performance of 9.92.

According to a report from ESPN, Bolt refused to speak to any reporters after the loss and rightfully so, now we have to wait for next year's London Olympics to see Bolt in action. I'm sure he will have a chip on his shoulder as he tries to redeem himself.

Video: Usain Bolt Scorches The Competition in Daegu, South Korea

Jamaican runner Usain Bolt easily outperformed his competition early Saturday after winning the 100 meters in 10.10 seconds at the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

In the footage below, you will see Bolt almost had the race won within the few steps out of the blocks. By the mid-point of the race, it was over and Bolt cruised to the finish line, even letting up over the last 10 meters.

"It was a good run, I came out there and executed" said Bolt after the race. Bolt, who set the world record in the 100 meters with a time of 9.58 seconds two years ago in Berlin, was without his biggest competition in Tyson Gay (US) and Asafa Powell (Jamaica) both of whom were out because of injury.

Are Mike Vick and Cam Newton Victims of Being Black Quarterbacks in the NFL?

There have been recent reports of Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson making strict demands on rookie Quarterback Cam Newton. According to multiple sources, Newton is forbidden from getting any tattoos and piercings.

In what may be more of a shock there was an article recently published on ESPN titled "What if Micheal Vick were White?" that will appear in the September 5 issue of ESPN The Magazine.

Both completely separate matters are particularly disturbing because race is involved.
